Applique Shapes

Finish our appliques with a sew disk for industrial embroidery machines, which includes all sizes of one shape with the 6 different stitches types offered, or order a sew disk that contains every shape and stitch type.

Applique Help

Hoop Advice
When creating appliqué designs, make sure your hoop is tight within the hoop wells. Some hoop assemblies will produce “play,” allowing the appliqué registration to move.

If your hoop slips in any direction, the column stitch will not catch the edge of your fabric properly. If this happens, the appliqué fabric can loosen from the garment & fray.

If you’re using bracket hoops, be sure all the bracket screws are tight. These screws can eventually loosen themselves from machine vibrations and movements.

If you’re using jacket-back hoops that drop into hoop wells, be sure they wedge themselves into the holes securely. If you notice any play here, try putting a small cardboard wedge in one end of the well.

Backings
A good stiff backing is very important when sewing appliqué, especially when sewing on heavy quilted jackets, heavy felt coats and even the new, heavier sweatshirts. Backing helps stabilizes the garment and holds stitches. Tear away will usually work for heavy garments - light garments or heavy stitching, may require cutting away.

Placing Appliqué
When you have finished your running stitch, it’s important to place your appliqué (and each subsequent layer) carefully. Unless you’re using Stahls’ Pressure Sensitive Poly-TWILL, you’ll need to use a spray adhesive like Stahls’ Lite Tack spray or a hobby iron to activate the adhesive - holding the appliqué in place while you’re sewing.

Without careful placement, stitches will not grip the appliqué edges properly.

Try Kiss Cut and receive your multi-color appliqué in one piece, with a disk to sew it down automatically.

The “Appliqué Stop” (Frame-out)
The appliqué stop is programmed into the design, which allows the panagraph to move away and gives you room to lay down the appliqué pieces. Some embroidery machines require you to key in a code when programming in the color sequence. We suggest that when you’re working with a full front design, hoop the garment upside down. The appliqué stop will be placed at the bottom of the design, when it stops, the panagraph will move away for ease of layout. Our findings have proven that hooping and loading the garment through the neck will distort and restrict the panagraph causing missed registration.

Thread Color Choice
With appliqué design, thread color choice is very important and allows you to get different looks with the same design. TIP: Using a satin stitch, try a contrasting color thread to add dimension and achieve a multi-color look. Using a zig-zag stitch (athletic look) match thread to color fabric.

Heat Seal When Finished Sewing
This gives you a more professional and finished look while bonding material, stitches and garment together. This also prevents puckering.
